Tottenham’s hopes of signing Marcelo Brozovic appear to be over.

Marcelo Brozovic of Croatia looks on during the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia Final between France and Croatia at Luzhniki Stadium on July 15, 2018 in Moscow, Russia.

According to Calciomercato, Inter Milan midfielder Marcelo Brozovic is nearing a new contract with the club after Tottenham Hotspur failed with an offer earlier this month.

Brozovic, 25, was always tipped for stardom from his days with Dinamo Zagreb in his native Croatia, but for some time, he failed to live up to his billing with Inter following a 2013 move.

The midfielder starred under Luciano Spalletti last season though, notching four goals and nine assists in 31 Serie A appearances last season to earn a starting role in Croatia’s World Cup side.

Brozovic was a key part of Croatia’s run to the World Cup final, and Sportske Novosti in Croatia reported earlier this month that Tottenham Hotspur offered €40million (£36million) for his services, which was £9million short of his £45million release clause.

Now, Calciomercato back up the claims that Spurs made a failed offer late in the English transfer window, and their hopes of signing the midfielder appear to be all but over.

It’s not only claimed that Brozovic is nearing a new deal with Inter as he looks to tie his future to the club, but also that a new deal would remove the €50million release clause from his contract.

That would give Inter the power to dictate whatever fee they wanted for Brozovic, and any demand would surely blow Spurs out of the water, with Daniel Levy famously frugal – and Tottenham may well live to regret not paying that extra £9million.
