According to The Mirror, Manchester United are set to hold talks with winger Jesse Lingard over a new contract this week, with Tottenham allegedly interested.

Lingard, 24, has come up through the ranks at Old Trafford having joined United at the age of just seven, and enjoyed loan spells with Leicester City, Birmingham City, Brighton and Hove Albion and Derby County.

Last season, the winger scored six times in 40 games for the Red Devils, including the winning goal in the FA Cup final against Crystal Palace, and has continued to feature under Jose Mourinho this term, with four goals and three assists to his name.

The winger, who scored for Manchester United in the recent EFL Cup final win over Southampton, has also represented England, and it seems that his contract could be discussed this week.

The Mirror report that United are set to hold talks with Lingard over a new contract this week, as they look to secure a new deal before Tottenham can make a concrete move for him.

It’s stated that Lingard is one of the lowest earners in the United squad, and he wants to boost his wage packet in line with other team-mates, though still some way short of the club’s top earners.

The report adds that, whilst Tottenham are lurking in the background for Lingard, he wants a five-year deal with United before the summer transfer window begins.

Spurs are likely to be in the market for another winger, and whilst many expect Crystal Palace’s Wilfried Zaha to be Mauricio Pochettino’s top target, Lingard could be an alternative.

Pochettino has a host of young English players at his disposal, and Lingard could fit the bill for Spurs – but having failed to nail down a spot in the United side, there would be major questions over whether he’s really good enough to improve the Spurs squad.
