The Daily Star claim Manchester United chief Ed Woodward is willing to make Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino the highest-paid manager in world football if he was to move to Old Trafford.

Pochettino has long been linked with the managerial hotseat at Manchester United, but those links have intensified over the last 24 hours after United opted to sack Jose Mourinho.

Mourinho has left United in a lowly sixth position in the Premier League table, though he did mastermind their progression into the last 16 of the Champions League. But fans were fed up even before last weekend’s 3-1 loss to Liverpool.

Woodward is expected to appoint a caretaker manager until the end of the season, with former Red Devils striker Ole Gunnar Solskjaer expected to be given the role – despite links to another former United man in Laurent Blanc.

But United are then expected to make an appointment in the summer and Pochettino is said to be at the top of their list. The Star report that Woodward will make him the highest-paid manager in world football.

Goal claim Mourinho was earning a whopping £23.4million a year at Manchester United, which was the most in the world. China manager Marcelo Lippi is second with £20.7million – and United are willing to offer Pochettino a deal in that bracket.

Pochettino, meanwhile, currently earns just £8.5million a year at Spurs, after signing a new contract in May that will keep him at Spurs until 2024 (Telegraph).

It may prove too hard to turn down for the Argentine, who is currently preparing his Spurs side to face Arsenal in the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup on Wednesday night.
