Tottenham Hotspur defender Toby Alderweireld remains a top target for Manchester United.

According to The Independent, Manchester United still feel a deal can be done for Tottenham Hotspur defender Toby Alderweireld this summer despite talks breaking down once already.
The Red Devils have brought in Stoke City goalkeeper Lee Grant, Porto defender Diego Dalot and Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder Fred this summer, but manager Jose Mourinho may still be keen on more additions.
The heart of United’s defence was chopped and change last season, as the likes of Chris Smalling, Eric Bailly, Phil Jones, Daley Blind, Victor Lindelof and Marcos Rojo all featured without ever really proving consistently that they can make a spot their own.
That has promoted reports of interest in a proven Premier League centre back in Toby Alderweireld, though The Independent report that talks with Tottenham over a deal have broken down once already.
It’s also added that United still feel a deal is there to be done though, and hold out hope that they can strike a deal with Spurs for the Belgian international before next month’s transfer deadline.
Alderweireld, 29, joined Spurs from Atletico Madrid in the summer of 2015 having starred on loan for Southampton, and played a key role in the Tottenham defence in his first two seasons with the club, forming a strong partnership alongside former Ajax and current Belgium teammate Jan Vertonghen in the heart of defence.

However, the Belgian missed a chunk of last season through injury, and amid claims that he can leave for just £25million in the summer of 2019 thanks to a specific release clause in his deal.
Alderweireld impressed again at the World Cup in Russia this summer, and that may well have been enough for United to try and kickstart talks once again before the transfer window slams shut next month.
