Earlier this week, reports suggested that Manchester United had offered Newcastle the chance to sign Donny van de Beek. Now, the Chronicle report that the Dutch midfielder is ‘high’ on the Toon’s list of January targets.
Van de Beek has been used incredibly sparingly ever since his £40million (Chronicle) arrival at Old Trafford. Despite boasting 75 goal involvements in 175 Ajax games, he has started just 19 of his 49 United outings.
The 24-year-old midfielder has only started four of 26 games in the Premier League. He needs to go and Manchester Evening News reported earlier this week that van de Beek had been offered to Newcastle and Dortmund.
Now, a new report from the Chronicle claims that actually, having been offered van de Beek, the playmaker is high on the shortlist at Newcastle. Whether the Toon pursue a midfielder next, remains to be seen.
Van de Beek to Newcastle: Move suits all parties, including United
With a right-back and a striker taken care of in Kieran Trippier and Chris Wood, Newcastle now have two other priorities that need taking care of. A centre-back, and a central midfielder – the former likely to be more crucial.
Indeed, the club are being strongly linked with Diego Carlos, Benoit Badiashile, Sven Botman and Liverpool’s Nat Phillips. Some reports even say they are hopeful a deal will be concluded by the weekend.
But when Newcastle do get round to a midfielder, it will surely be an attacking one. They have holding midfielders in Jonjo Shelvey, Isaac Hayden and Sean Longstaff. They need one with creativity – van de Beek is ideal.
