And the Sun reports the former Barnsley centre-back is a ‘surprise option’ for Mourinho, as he looks to ‘shore up’ the Red Devils’ back line.
Manchester United are not the only club to be credited with interest in Mawson however – with Tottenham Hotspur a notable suitor – and some reports suggest the 24-year-old could command a transfer fee in excess of £40 million.
United’s centre-back options consist of Eric Bailly, Chris Smalling, Phil Jones, Victor Lindelof and Marcos Rojo, none of whom have excelled this season.
Like Smalling, Mawson spent time at non-league Maidenhead United before landing in the Premier League.
