A report emanating from Italy today claims that Manchester United have joined Liverpool and Juventus in the race to sign Cagliari ace Nicolo Barella, according to Italian media outlet Corriere dello Sport.

The 20-year-old midfielder has really impressed in Italy this season, scoring two goals and chipping in with one assist in 18 Serie A games thus far, but it is his overall game that has drawn so much attention from some of Europe’s elite clubs.

Corriere dello Sport claim that he could be available for round €50 million (£44.4 million) this month, and that Jose Mourinho is keen on bringing him to Old Trafford.

The Italian publication claim that Barella is also wanted by United’s fierce rivals Liverpool, as well as Juventus, so Mourinho will not have things all his own way if he does press ahead in his pursuit of the 20-year-old.

The Italian youngster is such a talent, and could be a real coup for whichever club wins the race to sign him, but for £44.4 million, it would still be a risk bringing him to England, considering the fact that he is an unproven commodity in the Premier League.

With the January transfer window now open, this will be one for United and Liverpool fans to keep a very close eye on.
