Erik ten Hag’s Manchester United are in talks with PSV over signing Cody Gakpo, a player Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal, Eddie Howe’s Newcastle United and Carlo Ancelotti’s Real Madrid also want to sign, according to The Mirror.

The report published at 5pm today has claimed that Manchester United have opened talks with PSV over bringing Gakpo to Old Trafford in the January transfer window.

The Red Devils have made their move for the 23-year-old Netherlands international forward after learning that PSV are ready to sell him for less than £50 million due to financial problems.

Arsenal, Newcastle and Real Madrid are also keen on Gakpo, according to the report.

Gunners need to step up

In our view, if Arsenal are genuinely keen on signing Cody Gakpo, then they need to step up their game and open talks with PSV as well.

Manchester United want to sign a long-term replacement for the departed Cristiano Ronaldo, so their need for a versatile forward is far more than Arsenal’s.

However, the Gunners cannot have their Premier League title challenge derailed by injury to Gabriel Jesus and should at least try to bring in a replacement in January.

Gakpo is only 23, and his ability to play out wide or through the middle means that he would be a very good long-term signing for Arsenal.
