Manchester United are reportedly closing in on Benfica defender Victor Lindelof.

According to The Mirror, Manchester United are closing in on a deal to sign Benfica defender Victor Lindelof, in a January deal which could cost a whopping £38million.

United have impressed defensively of late, as Phil Jones and Marcos Rojo have kept two clean sheets in the last week, as they’ve forged a partnership in the absences of Chris Smalling and Eric Bailly.

Jose Mourinho also has Daley Blind at his disposal, but it seems that the United boss is lining up a deal to bring in another young centre back in a big-money deal having landed Bailly from Villarreal over the summer.

The Mirror report that United have offered a deal worth £34million rising to £38million for Benfica defender Victor Lindelof, having watched him on a number of occasions this season – including in last week’s derby with Sporting Lisbon.

Swedish star Lindelof, 22, joined Benfica from his hometown club Vasteras SK in 2012, and finally broke into the Benfica side last season, making 25 first-team appearances and even earning a place in Sweden’s Euro 2016 squad.

A powerful centre back who can also play at right back and in holding midfield, Lindelof was recently praised by compatriot and Manchester United star Zlatan Ibrahimovic, as quoted by ESPN.

Now, it looks like Lindelof and Ibrahimovic will become club team-mates, as whilst the Benfica star has a £30million release clause in his contract that can be activated at the end of the season, United boss Mourinho wants him in January, before another European club can sign him.

It’s added that Lindelof also wants to make the move next month, and with Mourinho pressing Ed Woodward to get the £38million deal done, we could see Lindelof at Old Trafford in 2017 if reports are to be believed.
