Manchester United reportedly wanted to sign the centre-back before he joined Liverpool.

According to a report from the Daily Mail, Manchester United made an enquiry for Virgil van Dijk in December of last year, but it was too little too late, as the Dutchman was already having his medical with Liverpool ahead of his proposed move to Anfield.
The 27-year-old joined the Reds from Southampton in January, for a fee believed to be worth in the region of £75 million, and he has gone on to establish himself as a vitally important player for Jürgen Klopp’s side.
Liverpool look like they will be Manchester City’s closest challengers this season – a sentence that will be incredibly hard to stomach for Manchester United fans.
Jose Mourinho has real problems on his hands at Old Trafford, having failed to bring in a world-class centre-back this summer.
Things could have been so different for the Red Devils, though.

According to a report from the Daily Mail, United made an inquiry for Van Dijk, but unfortunately for them, the towering Dutchman was already undergoing his medical ahead of his move to Liverpool.
The manner in which United have laboured in the transfer market this summer could very well come back to bite them, and nothing will hurt them more than seeing Van Dijk perform in the manner that he is for their bitter rivals Liverpool.
