According to the Daily Star, Manchester United are keen to lure Declan Rice away from West Ham United in 2019.

The Red Devils will be looking for new recruits after a difficult start to the season, in which boss Jose Mourinho has come in for huge criticism.

United will subsequently be looking for signings in 2019, and whilst fans may be looking for a centre back, right winger or striker, a holding midfielder may actually be needed.

Nemanja Matic has been a shadow of his former self this season, and landing his successor could be a smart move – if Mourinho is willing to accept one of his favourites isn’t up to scratch at this point.

Now, the Daily Star report that United may have already found Matic’s replacement, as they have allegedly communicated their interest in signing West Ham United’s Rice.

Rice, who has been coming up through the ranks with West Ham having previously been on the books with Chelsea, has starred under Manuel Pellegrini this season, producing some superb displays in the heart of midfield.

Capable of playing at centre back too, Rice has been at the centre of a contract stand-off with West Ham, who are yet to secure a new deal with their 19-year-old prospect.

Rice’s deal expires at the end of next season, and United are now seemingly positioning themselves to try and sign Rice either in January or at the end of the campaign, with West Ham no doubt hoping to fend them off and keep the youngster.
