Liverpool have tied Jordan Henderson down to a new deal.
According to the Daily Mail, Manchester City were primed to move for Jordan Henderson if he didn’t sign a new contract with Liverpool.
The Reds may have been focused on bringing in the likes of Alisson, Fabinho and Xherdan Shaqiri, but they are also making moves to keep their existing players.
On Monday, Liverpool tied midfielder and captain Jordan Henderson down to a new ‘long-term’ contract, ensuring he is at Anfield for the foreseeable future.
The England international has been vital under Jurgen Klopp and enjoyed a strong World Cup, with Liverpool’s deal certainly a smart move given that his existing deal was set to end in 2020.
Now, the Daily Mail report that the last time Henderson was approaching a similar stage of his contract in 2015, Manchester City were seriously considering a bid to bring him to the Etihad Stadium alongside Raheem Sterling.
It’s added that, if Henderson hadn’t signed his contract extension, a move from City to buy Henderson was ‘very likely’, with sporting director Michael Edwards moving quickly to secure his new deal.
City are certainly in the market for another holding midfield player given Fernandinho’s advancing years, but it’s fair to say that a move for 28-year-old Henderson would have been a huge surprise – even with his strong form for club and country.
