According to Kicker, Manchester City are interested in signing RC Lens midfielder Jonathan Clauss – Chelsea are also keen.

The German news outlet believe that both Champions League finalists are eyeing the 28-year-old, who RC Lens signed for free last year.

Clauss has a contract with the Ligue 1 outfit until 2023.

However, if Chelsea and the Citizens really are interested, they will surely have too much financial might for the French outfit.

Kicker state that a deal as low as €6 million (£5.2 million) is under discussion for a player who is – statistically – the best in France’s top-flight right now.

Ligue 1‘s official website relayed L’Equipe’s ratings for the season in a feature about Clauss, where they wrote that he has been the best outfield player in the division this season.

To achieve that in a league containing the likes of Neymar and Kylian Mbappé takes some doing.

In 34 appearances this season – all of which have come from right midfield – the Frenchman has scored three goals and provided seven assists.

In our view, it would be surprising if Manchester City signed Clauss.

Apart from the capture of Oleksandr Zinchenko, Guardiola doesn’t usually pull off bargain signings such as this one would be.

Also, at 28 years of age, it feels unlikely that Clauss has much room for improvement.

Having said that, anything could happen – keep an eye on his future.
