Manchester City are reportedly considering a move for Chelsea midfielder Mateo Kovacic, according to The Telegraph.

The Croatian midfielder has been in and out of the Chelsea team this season as he’s struggled with injuries.

Manchester City are in need of a midfield revamp as Ilkay Gundogan’s contract expires this summer, while Bernardo Silva appears to be angling for a move to Barcelona.

Kovacic has been with Chelsea since 2018, and has played a key role in their success over the past few seasons. However, with the club currently struggling under new manager Graham Potter, there is currently unrest at Stamford Bridge and that could lead to a few high-profile departures.

Chelsea recently spent over £100m on Enzo Fernandez, who could be seen as Kovacic’s long-term replacement, perhaps opening the door for the ‘fantastic’ midfielder to move on.

Kovacic would be a good fit for City, with his technical ability and work rate making him a perfect Pep Guardiola player, and it’s somewhat surprising to know that these two have never worked together before.

Indeed, Kovacic looks like a player born to play for Pep, and now, he may get his chance.

However, Chelsea may be reluctant to let Kovacic go, as he has been an important player for them over the past few seasons, but, as mentioned earlier, the current situation in west London does lend itself to the idea of some key players leaving the club.

It remains to be seen whether City will make a move for Kovacic, but with his contract set to expire in 2024, it could be an opportune time for them to make their move as Chelsea look to sell to capitalise on his market value as he enters the final year of his deal.

This is certainly a situation to keep an eye on.
