According to the Daily Star, Liverpool and Manchester City are prepared to pay big for Sevilla defender Diego Carlos.
It’s claimed that both clubs are desperate to sign the Brazilian, and are both prepared to pay the £70million release clause in his Sevilla contract.
However, City allegedly have a ‘slight advantage’ in the race for Carlos, because they are prepared to give him better personal terms.
Carlos, 27, featured in Brazil, Portugal and France before heading to Spain last summer, joining Sevilla from Nantes.
The previously unheralded centre back became a star in La Liga, turning in outstanding performances for Sevilla.
A Brazil cap surely isn’t far away for Carlos, and he now finds himself at the centre of a tug-of-war between England’s top two clubs right now.
City do need a centre back given the struggles of Nicolas Otamendi and John Stones, so partnering Carlos with Aymeric Laporte does make some sense.
A move to Liverpool wouldn’t be quite so obvious, as the money involved seems beyond the Reds right now, and spending £70million to replace Dejan Lovren – a player who was fourth-choice in his position – seems ill-advised.
Liverpool may well fancy Carlos, but it’s difficult to see them splashing £70million on him – and a move to City is much more likely on that basis.
