According to MARCA, Manchester City are interested in signing Villarreal defender Pau Torres, after he rejected a move to Tottenham.

What’s the story?

Well, Tottenham made a £51.6m bid for the Spain international, which was actually accepted – however, Torres didn’t want to move to Spurs.

Had he accepted, he would’ve become the second most expensive player in Tottenham’s history.

Torres wanted to play Champions League football, hence why he declined Tottenham’s advances.

Now, Manchester City are planning to bring him to the Premier League.

MARCA believe Txiki Beguiristain – Manchester City’s Sporting Director – is very well positioned to land the 24-year-old.

If that happened, it would be a real kick in the gut for Nuno Espirito Santo.

In our view, we can see this deal happening.

As aforesaid, Torres wants Champions League football, which Pep Guardiola delivers for the Citizens on a regular basis now.

Additionally, Manchester City have the finances to lure him away from the Yellow Submarine, and can make Villarreal an irresistible offer.

However, we’re not quite sure Guardiola needs another centre-back, in truth.

The Spaniard already has Aymeric Laporte, Ruben Dias, John Stones and Nathan Ake at his disposal, which is a pretty good group of centre-backs to own.

Nevertheless, the Citizens won’t care about that – they seem intent on bolstering the squad to a whole new level.

If we were Tottenham, we’d give up on landing Torres now.

There’s no way Spurs can outdo Manchester City financially, or from a sporting aspect – a switch to the Etihad Stadium is currently far more attractive for him.
