Manchester City are reportedly leading a seven-team race for Rangers talent Billy Gilmour.

According to the Daily Mail, Manchester City are leading the race for Rangers teenager Billy Gilmour, ahead of a host of Premier League rivals.

Gilmour, 15, has had a whirlwind week. On Sunday afternoon, he played a starring role as Scotland Under-16’s claimed a 2-0 win over Northern Ireland in the Victory Shield, and his performance seemingly caught the eye.

Firstly, the Daily Record carried quotes from an unnamed coach, who claimed that Gilmour is so good that he’ll make his Rangers debut within the next two years, which certainly left Gers fans excited about his future at Ibrox.

However, Gilmour is now attracting interest from other clubs. The Daily Record claimed on Wednesday that Arsenal, Chelsea, Everton, Manchester United, Southampton and Tottenham Hotspur are all keen to lure Gilmour away from Glasgow.

Whilst it was stated that Rangers believe they can keep Gilmour with a promise of a path to Mark Warburton’s first team, the Daily Mail believe that Manchester City are now leading the race to sign the midfielder in what could be a bargain deal according to the Daily Record.

Under FIFA guidelines for players under the age of 23, a nominal compensation fee is paid when completing a cross-border deal, as we saw when Celtic signed Moussa Dembele from Fulham and Rangers landed Jordan Rossiter from Liverpool over the summer.

With that in mind, it’s claimed that an English club could sign Gilmour for just £100,000 in compensation, and that’s small change for any Premier League club, especially for a player who has been tipped for such a huge future.

Rangers will be desperate to fend off interest in Gilmour having lost young talents like Dylan McGeouch and Charlie Telfer in recent years, but whether they can keep him out of Manchester City’s clutches remains to be seen.
