Rafael Benitez is open to talking to Everton about their managerial job, the Athletic say.

Benitez is currently without a club and has previously expressed a desire to return to the Premier League on Sky Sports.

Despite his strong Liverpool connections, Benitez is now said to be willing to listen to Everton about their vacant position.

The Toffees are currently on the hunt for a new man to bring to Goodison Park following the departure of Carlo Ancelotti.

Would Benitez be a good appointment?

Benitez would be a controversial appointment, due to his affinity towards Everton’s biggest rivals.

However, in terms of calibre, there are few options on the market who would be more high profile than Benitez.

Benitez has won 168 Premier League games across the course of his career – with Liverpool and Newcastle United – and led the Reds to Champions League triumph during his time at Anfield.

Benitez, for that reason, remains very popular at Liverpool, although that may be tested somewhat if he was to join Everton.

The Athletic’s report does say that Everton are yet to really settle on a first choice.

But as the days pass after Ancelotti’s shock departure, Everton’s board must surely be getting closer to making a final decision on who to go after.
