Mauricio Pochettino is reportedly on the shortlist to become the new Belgium manager.
Belgian outlet, Nieuwsblad, has claimed that Pochettino is among the top candidates to replace Roberto Martinez. The 49-year-old was recently sacked after a poor World Cup campaign in Qatar.
Pochettino has been out of work since being sacked by PSG last summer.
He has been heavily linked with a return to management, and his name has been mentioned as a possible replacement for Antonio Conte at Tottenham Hotspur with The Sun’s Martin Lipton recently claiming that Pochettino will be offered the job if Conte does go at the end of the season as has been reported.
However, it now seems that Pochettino may be set to take on a different challenge in international management.
Joachim Low, the former Germany coach and Andres Villas-Boas, another ex-Spurs manager, are also on the shortlist for the Belgium job.
Pochettino has no experience in international management, but having previously been linked with the England national team job, there are certainly some within the game who think he’s up to the task.
Of course, Pochettino is a very talented coach who should be able to make this step. During his tenure at Tottenham, Pochettino led the team to the Champions League final and consistently finished in the top four in the Premier League, while he won a league title at PSG.
Despite a poor World Cup, Belgium are currently ranked the fourth-best national team in the world, and Pochettino would be taking on a major challenge if he were to be appointed as the new head coach as he looks to squeeze one final bit of magic out of this so-called golden generation.
It remains to be seen whether Pochettino will take on the Belgium job or if he will return to club management. Either way, it looks like the Argentine will have many options to choose from as he looks to get back into the game.
