Sokratis Papastathopoulos – Greece (Ailura)

According to Corriere del Mezzogiorno (print edition, page 11, August 21, 2020), Napoli are interested in signing Sokratis Papastathopoulos from Arsenal in the summer transfer window.

It has been reported by the Italian publication that Napoli manager Gennaro Gattuso has spoken to the Arsenal central defender on the phone.

The report has added that the Greece international is trying to convince the Gunners to terminate his contract and make him a free agent so that he can make a move to Italian club Napoli on a free transfer.

Arsenal exit

Arsenal have quite a few central defenders on their books, and, according to Gianlucadimarzio.com, they are also set to sign Gabriel from Lille.

Sokratis is a very experienced defender, but given that he is 32 years of age, it would make sense for the Gunners to let him leave.

According to Spotrac.com, the former Borussia Dortmund star earns £92,000 per week as salary.

If Arsenal head coach Mikel Arteta does not plan to use Sokratis regularly next season, then it would make sense for the North London club to let him leave, although one suspects that they will want to get some sort of a transfer fee.
