According to The Sun, Chris Wilder was furious with Sheffield United for missing out on current Aston Villa and West Ham United stars.
Wilder left his post as Blades boss earlier this month, bringing an end to his dream spell in charge of his boyhood club.
Wilder took United from League One to the Premier League, but a poor season and internal conflict ultimately ended with him leaving last weekend.
Details are now emerging about Wilder’s frustration at Bramall Lane, with much of it surrounding the club’s inability to sign his top targets.
It’s claimed that Wilder wanted to sign Matty Cash from Nottingham Forest and Ollie Watkins from Brentford, but missed out to Aston Villa for both players last summer.
Wilder then wanted to sign Jesse Lingard in January, but United missed out as West Ham United swooped in to land him on loan until the end of the season.
Those misses don’t look great now. Cash has been outstanding at right back for Villa this season, whilst Watkins has smashed 10 goals in 28 Premier League games.
Lingard has remarkably hit five goals and two assists in just seven outings for West Ham – a record that could have given the Blades some unlikely hope of staying up.
As it is, United must now plan for the Championship, and will be left to wonder what could have been had they managed to sign Wilder’s top targets.
