Leeds United boss Marcelo Bielsa allowed Marcus Antonsson to leave in the summer, and he is doing a superb job of proving a point to the Whites.
It would be unfair to criticise Leeds’ decision to sell Marcus Antonsson in the summer. Under Marcelo Bielsa, Kemar Roofe has been sensational and Patrick Bamford looks ready to push him now that he is back fit and scoring goals.
Antonsson meanwhile, struggled during his first season at Elland Road and lost his way after a very bright start out on loan at Blackburn last term.
Selling him to Malmo therefore, seemed like a good move for all parties. However, it cannot be denied that the 27-year-old is doing a remarkable job of proving a point to the Championship leaders.
Antonsson scored eight league goals in 15 league appearances for Uwe Rosler’s side, while he has also helped them reach the knockout stages of the Europa League with five goals in the competition, including the winner in their most recent game against Besiktas.
That victory has helped set up a last 32 tie with Chelsea in February. But perhaps Antonsson may not be there for those games.
The interest highlights what a remarkable turnaround the forward has enjoyed. Some fans felt that he deserved more of a chance at Leeds – he seemed to be the biggest loser when Garry Monk quickly gave up on the system that saw two players up front – and his form hints that he could have potentially done better with Leeds if given more opportunities.
As mentioned, Bielsa’s men are currently not paying the price for losing Antonsson in the summer. But it will be intriguing for Leeds fans to see where he may end up as the interest in him reportedly builds.
