Lyon are reportedly plotting on selling former Liverpool attacker Xherdan Shaqiri just four months after the Swiss international left Anfield for the Ligue 1 side.
According to L’Equipe, Lyon are struggling with the financial expense Shaqiri is burdening the club, with Lyon, and French football in general, still feeling the crippling effects of the Covid-19 pandemic.
As per the report, the winger earns €350k-a-month (£290k), with Peter Bosz hardly handing the former Bayern Munich star minutes in the XI.
Shaqiri has made just 13 appearances in all competitions for Lyon and played under 900 minutes, with the 30-year-old scoring just once for the French side. And because of this bad form, the club are eager to sell.
Indeed, it is another dramatic fall from grace for Shaqiri following his exit from Liverpool. The winger was mainly a bit-part player for Jurgen Klopp last season, and his move to France seemed to be a logical move on paper for the forward.
However, Shaqiri’s spell in Lyon has been anything but productive, and now the French side are keen to offload the attacker in January, where a buyer could be hard to come by given the forward’s high wages and age.
Dip in form shows Liverpool were right to sell Shaqiri to Lyon

Shaqiri’s time at Liverpool looked up for months before his move to Lyon. And this latest update on the Swiss star’s future shows that the Reds were right to offload the winger when they did.
Whilst it is a shame to see a player as talented and as explosive as Shaqiri dip to new lows, it could open the door for the former Stoke attacker to find a new home in the twilight years of his career if he can leave Lyon.
