Sunderland had hoped to bring Edwin Gyasi in during the January transfer window, but it appears that their hopes have suffered a setback.

Sunderland desperately need a productive transfer window. Chris Coleman’s men are bottom of the Championship and now have to cope for the rest of the season without their leading goalscorer, with Lewis Grabban’s loan spell at the Stadium of Light being prematurely terminated by Bournemouth.

The Mail reports that Gyasi was a player that they are keen on, with the 27-year-old scoring six times and providing three assists in the league for Norwegian side this season.

What perhaps quashes Coleman’s hopes even further is the fact that the Mail adds that Nottingham Forest, Reading and Sheffield Wednesday are also all keen on the Ghana international – and it may be optimistic on Sunderland’s part to imagine that none of the trio would be willing to meet Aalesund’s demands.
Of course, there is plenty of time left before the deadline, but with just one player through the door this month – with defender Jake Clarke-Salter arriving on loan from Chelsea – Sunderland fans will be hoping that the next few weeks prove extremely eventful for the club on the transfer front.
