According to Bild, reported Celtic target Taiwo Awoniyi is keen to trade Liverpool for Union Berlin this summer after spending last season on loan at Mainz.

The 23-year-old’s contract at Liverpool expires in the summer of 2023.

Awoniyi has been on the books of the Merseyside club since 2015. However, with no first-team place in sight, a permanent move away from Anfield is a possibility.

According to a recent report in the Daily Star, Scottish Premiership champions Celtic are keen.

But the latest reports from Germany say Awoniyi is drawn to a move to Union Berlin after rejecting the chance to join Greek side PAOK Thessaloniki this past week.

Awoniyi, a Nigeria U23 international, scored just once in 12 games for Mainz but he was labelled ‘sensational’ by their manager Achim Beierlorzer in Kicker.

Liverpool have plenty of strength upfront in Roberto Firmino, Divock Origi and youngster Rhian Brewster who may feel can make an impact this season.

Perhaps the time for Awoniyi to move on is now. According to the Daily Star detailing Celtic’s interest, the Reds, meanwhile, are reportedly looking for a £9 million fee.

Union Berlin impressed in their Bundesliga campaign last season. But with the progressive club still building, it’s unlikely they could gather such funds to cement a permanent deal.
