According to Sky Sports, Liverpool’s strict transfer policy means a deal for Napoli defender Kalidou Koulibaly would be ‘prohibited’.
It’s claimed that, despite reports suggesting that Koulibaly is a top Liverpool target this summer, he won’t be arriving at Anfield.
Liverpool allegedly have a strict policy in place, and that means spending £60million on a 29-year-old just isn’t going to happen.
That isn’t a huge shock; Liverpool’s run of silverware under Jurgen Klopp has been built on signing players with potential to get better, rather than splashing out on players approaching their 30’s.
Koulibaly is one of the top defenders in the world, but Liverpool splashing out for him right now doesn’t make sense – especially in light of the global pandemic.
Joe Gomez has impressed alongside Virgil van Dijk, whilst Joel Matip is an able deputy when fit, with Dejan Lovren the only question mark.
This report claimed that Liverpool will let the Croatian leave this summer, but as long as they can bring in another centre back to replace him – and spending £60million or anything near that seems unlikely.
Targeting another centre back in the event of Lovren’s exit may point to Klopp feeling that Sepp van den Berg just isn’t quite ready for the step up yet, but Liverpool will likely try to make sure that the Dutchman’s path isn’t blocked too much by a new signing.
