Sunderland were hoping to bring both Ben Woodburn and Danny Ward in from Liverpool on loan.

Liverpool goalkeeper Danny Ward looks on during the Barclays Premier League match between Swansea City and Liverpool at The Liberty Stadium on May 1, 2016 in Swansea, Wales.

According to a report from The Sun on Sunday (print edition; 17th December 2017; page 61), Sunderland will not be bringing Danny Ward in on loan during the January transfer window, with the Liverpool stopper not keen on moving to the Stadium of Light.

Chris Coleman had reportedly identified Ward as a potential target for next month as he looks to bolster his goalkeeper options after a poor start to the Championship season.

Ward played under Coleman during the Black Cats boss’ time in charge of Wales. But despite that relationship and the fact that he has made just one appearance for the Reds in all competitions so far this season, the 24-year-old is unlikely to arrive to try and help Sunderland get themselves away from danger in the second tier.

The Sun on Sunday (print edition; 17th December 2017; page 61) reports that Ward plans to snub the chance to join Sunderland on loan as he is not keen on the idea.

And The Sun on Sunday adds that it is set to be a double transfer blow for Coleman with Jurgen Klopp also unprepared to let young striker Ben Woodburn – who is also on Sunderland’s radar – leave the club in January.

While Coleman’s squad could have surely done with having Ward and Woodburn added to it next month, there appears to be some encouraging signs on the pitch for the club right now, with Saturday’s win over Fulham meaning that they have taken seven points out of a possible 12 in their last four games and now find themselves outside of the bottom three.
