90Min claim Liverpool have won the race to sign Derry City wonderkid Trent Kone-Doherty, beating Manchester City and Manchester United. The 15-year-old talent has agreed to move to Anfield, and not Manchester.
The talented teen was able to move before his 18th birthday as his birthplace was not considered an international transfer – he is Derry-born. The attacker has already been named on the senior side’s bench.
Not only that, but Kone-Doherty has already won five caps for Ireland’s Under-16 side – scoring two goals against Malta and Northern Ireland back in September and October. He has helped Ireland win three of five games.
It is a big coup for Liverpool, and perhaps a sign that Jurgen Klopp’s faith in youth is preferred to others. Celtic have also missed out, along with Manchester United and Manchester City – Kone-Doherty choosing the Reds.
Kone-Doherty to Liverpool: Klopp pathway wins race for Reds
While it is a big decision, it is hardly a surprising one. Celtic might have been the best move, but Kone-Doherty has clearly chosen to hone his skills at one of the world’s best clubs. Celtic have signed numerous Irish talents.
But with Liverpool interested, and the likes of Tyler Morton, Harvey Elliott, Owen Beck, Max Woltman and plenty more getting game time this season – Kone-Doherty has probably made the right decision.
He has a better chance of progressing into the first team at Liverpool, than at Manchester United or Manchester City.
