According to El Nacional, Liverpool tried to sign Lucas Vazquez from Real Madrid over the summer, although he rejected a move to Anfield.
What’s the story?
Well, the Spanish news outlet believe the 30-year-old is now regretting his decision to turn down Jürgen Klopp.
Vazquez was a free agent in the summer, and El Nacional write that he was expected to pursue a new opportunity.
However, the 9-cap Spain international eventually decided to sign a new contract at Real Madrid until 2024, something he now regrets.
Vazquez felt he would get more game time under Carlo Ancelotti, who replaced Zinedine Zidane in the summer.
Sadly, Ancelotti does not value the Spaniard, and feels he is too weak when it comes to defending.
Now, Vazquez must push for a move in January, or work hard to turn his situation around at Real Madrid.
Lucas Vazquez would’ve been perfect for Liverpool
As far as free transfers go, Liverpool could’ve had another James Milner on their hands if they signed Vazquez.
The Real Madrid No.17 is a forward by trade, although he can also play at right-back, something he’s done 34 times for Los Blancos.
If Liverpool signed him, Klopp would’ve had another great utility player who could fill in for Trent Alexander-Arnold when needed.
At the moment, Milner fulfils that role, like he did against Crystal Palace.
However, he’s now 35, so it would’ve been nice to have a younger option to succeed the ex-Manchester City man as Klopp’s utility option.
Nevertheless, it was out of Liverpool’s hands.
Vazquez made the call, and he must now live with his decision.
