It looks like Liverpool might be set to join the race for Gaetano Castrovilli.

A couple of Premier League clubs – most notably Everton – have been linked with a move for the Fiorentina midfielder in recent weeks.

But Liverpool may be about to join their Merseyside rivals in wanting the 23-year-old star, who has started 24 of the Italian club’s 26 league games this season.

According to Il Messagero, the Reds have decided to ‘get serious’ about signing Castrovilli, and that a ‘dizzying’ offer is being considered to trump competition from Juventus, Roma and Inter Milan.

The report adds that the Viola value their player at €50 million – or £44 million – but it seems a bit high for the Premier League champions elect.

It’s been reported this week that the reason Timo Werner isn’t going to Liverpool is because the club couldn’t afford his £52 million release clause.

Money is obviously tight at Anfield, like it is at every club around Europe due to the global health crisis, and if they do spend a significant sum of money on any player it probably won’t be an unknown midfielder.

Jurgen Klopp has a lot of midfield options and somebody of Castrovilli’s position just isn’t going to enhance the squad that much, relative to what he’d cost.
