Football website 90Min claim Liverpool and Newcastle have held talks to sign Bayer Leverkusen defender Jonathan Tah – while Tottenham staged talks in the winter window for the Germany centre-back, but prefer Piero Hincapie.

Tah, 26, has become one of the best defenders in Bundesliga football in recent years. The 16-time Germany star joined Leverkusen in 2015 – almost eight years ago. It comes after breaking through Hamburg’s youth academy.

Playing 20 times for Hamburg, he joined Leverkusen and has since clocked up a huge 283 games. For a player who will only turn 27 later this month, he has already clocked up an enormous 300 league and cup games at senior level.

Renowned for his power, his pace and his aerial ability – Tah is a proper centre-back. Little surprise, then, that many Premier League clubs are interested. Liverpool, Newcastle and Tottenham have all held talks to sign the defender.

Liverpool and Newcastle have spoken to his intermediaries in January. Tah is keen on a move to the Premier League with West Ham also interested. Tottenham were in talks, but Spurs prefer a move for his teammate, Hincapie.

Liverpool and Newcastle hold Tah talks: Tottenham prefer Hincapie

Tah is said to want a move to the Premier League. So, which club is best for him? Liverpool need a complete re-think at centre-back. In the absence of Virgil van Dijk – Joe Gomez, Joel Matip and Ibrahima Konate have really struggled.

Bringing in Tah instantly gives van Dijk a permanent partner. But without Champions League football, would ‘ambitious’ Tah be interested? Newcastle and Spurs look well-placed to qualify for the Champions League.

Spurs desperately need to bring in competition for Eric Dier, as well as cover for Cristian Romero and Tah does that. However, Newcastle partnering Tah with Sven Botman would be incredible. Interesting to see his choice of move.
