Liverpool are reportedly set to bring in Porto’s Vitor Matos.
According to the London Evening Standard, Porto coach Vitor Matos is set to complete a move to Liverpool in the coming days.
Liverpool lost Jurgen Klopp’s assistant Zeljko Buvac in 2018, and that meant that coach Pep Lijnders ended up being promoted to become the German’s new right-hand man.
The Reds have still been keen to add a new coach to bridge the gap between developmental football and first-team action, which is what Lijnders initially did before stepping up.
It now seems that Liverpool have found their man, as Porto B coach Vitor Matos will be heading to Anfield to help Klopp bring through young players.
Matos, 31, returned to Porto in 2018 after a brief spell in China with Shandong Luneng, and has been assisting Rui Barros with the Porto B side.
Intriguingly, he was Porto Under-15 boss in 2011-12, meaning he is another Liverpool coach to have worked with Wolverhampton Wanderers star Ruben Neves.
Lijnders worked with Neves at Porto too, and told O Jogo earlier this year that the 22-year-old interests Liverpool, suggesting that the Reds may well be eyeing him up, and if Matos does arrive, there will be two coaches at Anfield who have history with Neves.
A move for Matos may well strengthen that pursuit of Neves in an attempt to bolster Klopp’s midfield in the future, but for now, the focus will be on improving the young players already at Anfield.
