According to reputable Spanish outlet, El Pais, Liverpool are starting to believe they have made a mistake in signing Darwin Nunez for a club-record fee this summer.

The Uruguayan arrived on Merseyside in a deal that could be worth up to £85m, and it’s fair to say that he hasn’t hit the ground running.

One goal, one assist, one red card is Nunez’s record so far this season, while his all-around performances have been less than convincing.

Nunez has been described as ‘great’ recently, but that sort of praise has been few and far between since arriving at Liverpool.

According to this report, Liverpool have some real concerns around Nunez’s footballing IQ, with the cognitive abilities he’s shown in training and in matches.

Liverpool are less than convinced by Nunez so far by the sounds of things, and it’s not hard to understand why.

Some of Nunez’s decision-making has been utterly dreadful this season. He hangs onto the ball for far too long at times, while one of his biggest issues surrounds when he’s on the ball in wide areas.

Indeed, it’s not so much Nunez’s ability to cross the ball, but his style of just hitting the ball into central areas with power and hoping that someone will get on the end of it just isn’t going to work in this team.

Of course, it’s incredibly early in Nunez’s Anfield career, and it’s ridiculous to completely write off a player after just a handful of games, but it does have to be said that things aren’t looking good so far.

With Roberto Firmino in good form and Diogo Jota returning from injury, we have to wonder how much gametime Nunez will get in the coming weeks.

One thing is for sure, the Uruguayan has plenty to prove at Anfield before he can be described as a good signing.
