Newcastle United have been told by Liverpool that they will not be able to join the cluster of sides offering to take Sheyi Ojo on loan.
According to a report from The Sun, Newcastle have been told that they can only join the race to sign Liverpool winger Sheyi Ojo if they offer £10 million and insert a buy-back option in the deal.
The Sun reports that the Reds have been angered by the Magpies’ previous attempts to bring the 20-year-old to St James’ Park, and have now informed them that they will not be able to join the race to take Ojo on loan.
Liverpool’s Sheyi Ojo
Fulham, Middlesbrough and Derby County are all willing to take the England under-20 on a temporary basis, but Liverpool have told Newcastle that the only way that they can sign Ojo is if they sign him permanently.
The Sun reports that Rafa Benitez’s men will have to offer the Reds £10 million for the wide-man, while the transfer will also need to include a clause that would enable the Merseyside outfit to bring the youngster back to Anfield at some stage in the future.
With Newcastle already signing two wingers during this window, it would perhaps be something of a surprise if the Magpies decided to meet Liverpool’s valuation – especially if Benitez is working with a limited budget for the remainder of the window.
Ojo has only made a handful of appearances at the highest level, so sanctioning an eight-figure move for him would arguably be a gamble – but if Benitez is determined to win the race, perhaps he will consider trying to make the deal happen.
