According to Tutto Mercato Web, Liverpool have asked FC Porto for information about the potential signing of Chancel Mbemba.

The 55-cap DR Congo international is also attracting interest from Napoli, after a superb performance against Cristiano Ronaldo in the Champions League.

Mbemba managed to nullify the five-time Ballon d’Or winner as FC Porto progressed into the quarter-finals, after beating Juventus on away goals.

Tutto Mercato Web add that the 26-year-old has a contract with the Portuguese giants until 30th June 2022.

It is also mentioned that FC Porto have slapped a €15 million (£12.8 million) price tag on the centre-back’s head.

Of course, if Liverpool don’t make Ozan Kabak’s loan move permanent in the summer, there’s a chance they could be back in the market for a central defender.

In that respect, Jürgen Klopp could do worse than sign Mbemba, as he already boasts Premier League experience.

The former Anderlecht colossus spent time with Newcastle from 2015 to 2018, racking up 42 Premier League appearances for the Magpies.

Interestingly, he also played under ex-Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez at St James’ Park.

In our view, if Liverpool aren’t 100% convinced that Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip can stay fit next season, Mbemba is worth bringing to Anfield.

He knows England’s top-flight well, and for just £12.8 million, he represents a potential bargain for the Premier League champions.
