According to a report from The Guardian, Liverpool have held positive talks with Georginio Wijnaldum over a new contract.

The Dutch international, signed from Newcastle United for £25 million (BBC) back in 2016, has been a reliable performer for Jurgen Klopp’s side over the last two years.

Evening Standard claimed two months ago that Klopp was desperate for the Dutchman to sign a new deal before the end of this season.

Wijnaldum will soon enter the final year of his contract and there has been some speculation over his future.

However, it seems like Liverpool will put an end to all those rumours very soon. The report claims that Wijanldum is expected to pen a new deal which will keep him at Anfield at least until the summer of 2024.

Liverpool’s only criticism, perhaps a harsh one, has been their lack of firepower from central midfield. The Reds are overly dependent on their famed front three to deliver the goods and they have very rarely disappointed.

Wijnaldum has chipped in with a few goals himself. The former Newcastle man has only five to his name this season but he has always delivered when it has mattered.

His brace against Barcelona in the Champions League last season laid the perfect foundation for the Reds to go on and lift their sixth European trophy, which gave them the confidence to be as good as they have been this season.

A new deal for him will certainly be welcomed by all Liverpool fans who will be hoping that his contract situation will be wrapped up very soon.
