Liverpool staff feared that Diogo Jota’s season was over when he initially picked up his knee injury back in December, the Athletic report.

Jota is still on the treatment table, as he edges closer to fitness at Liverpool.

His absence has been a huge frustration among Liverpool supporters, as it has really slowed the roaring start that he made after arriving at Anfield.

However, Reds staff actually apparently feel fairly relieved that Jota’s injury issue wasn’t worse.

When the 24-year-old picked up the problem many of Liverpool’s staff thought that it could be so serious that he would not play again this term.

If that had been the case, Jota would have joined Joe Gomez and Virgil van Dijk in missing the entire campaign.

But, as things stand, he should be back sooner rather than later – with the latest reports in the Athletic saying he’ll be back next month.

Jota’s return to fitness will be a huge boost for Liverpool, who have badly missed him in his absence.

The Portuguese striker proved to be a major goal threat in the first few months of the season, and with Liverpool’s attack not firing on all cylinders, there is a feeling that his return could be key to Jurgen Klopp’s side’s chances of success this term.
