Liverpool are reportedly keen on recent Celtic trialist Gavin Bazunu.
According to The Irish Sun, Liverpool have been scouting Shamrock Rovers goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu, along with Brighton and Hove Albion and Norwich City.
The Reds are expected to be in the market for a new goalkeeper this summer having seen Loris Karius endure a nightmare in the Champions League final, though they seem to have their sights on one for the future.
That may not please fans who are looking for a goalkeeper to come in for first-team football right away, but a talent in Ireland appears to be on their radar.
The Irish Sun report that Liverpool sent goalkeeping coach John Achterberg to watch Shamrock Rovers teenager Gavin Bazunu in action against Derry City on Friday night.
16-year-old Bazunu has come into the side in place of the experienced Alan Mannus, and has now kept three clean sheets in three games, with interest seemingly mounting.
The report notes that Bazunu was recently on trial with Celtic, and Brendan Rodgers may now have to move quickly in order to pip his former club to the teenager’s signature.
A Premier League move – especially to a huge club like Liverpool – may be appealing, but Celtic could offer him a pathway to first-team football that may not arrive at Anfield.
Craig Gordon is nearing the latter stages of his career, and with Scott Bain lined up as his successor, Bazunu would have the chance to stake his claim as Celtic’s true goalkeeper of the future – and that may just give Celtic a chance against Bazunu.
