Liverpool will retain their interest in two young stars from the Bundesliga going into next summer’s transfer window, according to the Liverpool Echo, with both players likely to not be available in January.

The Reds looked to sign Borussia Monchengladbach’s Mahmoud Dahoud and Borussia Dortmund’s Christian Pulisic but were denied in their efforts.

Liverpool’s efforts to land Dahoud were thwarted as Gladbach were not prepared to sell a third central midfielder this summer, but the 20-year-old is expected to leave the club next year having turned down a new contract. Dahoud is expected to cost around £25 million, but Liverpool’s chances of signing the player could depend on whether they have Champions League football to offer in the following campaign.

Pulisic is well-known to Jurgen Klopp having joined the Borussia Dortmund academy towards the end of his management at the club, but Dortmund were not prepared to sanction a sale for the £11 million offered by the Reds.

It’s clear that both of these players are targets with a medium to long-term plan in mind but it shows the importance of the Reds having a good season this term in order to try and land them ahead of next season.

If the Reds have a season where they can qualify for the Champions League, and perhaps win a trophy in the process, then the club becomes that bit more of an attractive proposition for any player.

Liverpool showing they are still interested in the player for a sustained period could work in their favour if either player is given a choice of club – they may be persuaded to move to a team that has shown commitment in their pursuit to land them, but in a competitive transfer market there will be a lot of work to do in order to land either Dahoud or Pulisic.
