According to The Times, Wolverhampton Wanderers wanted to sign Liverpool defender Neco Williams to replace Matt Doherty.

It’s claimed that Wolves made contact with the Reds to try and sign Williams, having sold Irishman Doherty to Tottenham Hotspur.

Liverpool seemingly batted them away given that Williams signed a new long-term contract in August, but the attention soon turned to Ki-Jana Hoever, who ended up making the move to Molineux.

The Reds used Wolves’ interest in Hoever to negotiate a deal for Diogo Jota, with the net spend eventually coming to around £32million.

Liverpool will certainly be delighted to bring in Jota, given that he has now scored six goals in his last three games for the club.

Hoever has only played 29 minutes of Premier League action, but at just 18, he is very much one for the future for Nuno Espirito Santo.

As for Williams, this is at least a sign that Liverpool see a bright future for him at Anfield, having not only given him that new deal but rebuffed rival interest.

Jurgen Klopp recently called Williams ‘a machine’, and the Welsh youngster should be around the first team for some time yet, even if usurping Trent Alexander-Arnold at right back will be almost impossible.
