According to a report from the Mirror, Liverpool were offered the chance to sign Alisson Becker for just £4 million way back in the summer of 2015, but chose to pass up on the opportunity.

Reds boss Jürgen Klopp brought the Brazilian number one to Anfield earlier this week for £66.8m – a world record fee for a goalkeeper.

The Mirror claim that Liverpool could have saved themselves £62.8 million, however, having been offered Alisson for juts £4 million in the summer of 2015.

The 25-year-old was playing for Brazilian side Internacional at the time, and the Mirror claims that UK-based intermediaries working on behalf of the player’s agent, Ze Maria Neis, were asked to secure a move to Liverpool that summer.

The news, if true, will be a bitter pill to swallow for the Liverpool hierarchy, and despite the fact that they eventually got their man, a little bit more foresight could have saved them a small fortune.

If he goes on to play a key role for the Merseyside outfit’s push for the Premier League title, though, £66.8 million will still represent decent value for money for Klopp’s side.

It could have been so much better, though…
