This Thiago Alcantara to Liverpool story is swiftly turning into a bit of a saga.
The Spain international has been linked with a move to Liverpool for well over a month after it was revealed that he wouldn’t be extending his contract at Bayern Munich.
Thiago, who has a year to run on his existing deal in Bavaria, is valued at around £27 million by the German giants [Bild] but the newly-crowned Premier League champions are yet to meet that figure.
And The Independent has reported that although people at Anfield want to sign Thiago, he won’t be recruited if there’s a risk that he could disrupt the harmony within Jurgen Klopp’s squad.
The former Barcelona midfielder isn’t a troublemaker but his arrival could and probably would make other stars fear for their role under Klopp.
Gini Wijnaldum is already being linked with a move away and if Klopp wants the Dutchman – out of contract next summer – to stick around then signing competition in the form of Thiago may not be the best strategy.
And then there’s Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, who already struggles to make Klopp’s first XI on a regular basis, and that challenge would only grow steeper if the 29-year-old was signed.
There’s a lot of Liverpool fans who want this deal done, but is it worth upsetting the players who have helped the Reds to a Champions League and Premier League title over the past 14 months? Perhaps not.
