River Plate's Lucas Alario in action

Liverpool are ready to rival Tottenham Hotspur for the signing of highly-rated Argentina forward Lucas Alario, according to a report from the Sun.

Alario has emerged a hot property in South America after making his name at Colon in his home country, and over the past year has helped to fire River Plate to Copa Libertadores glory and the Club World Cup final in 2015.

The 23-year-old has also won two senior caps for his country after receiving his first call-up last month, and is thought to be the subject of interest from around Europe.

Tottenham Hotspur have previously been credited with a strong interest in signing the forward, via the London Evening Standard, and had been considered the favourites for his signature.

However, the Sun now reports that Liverpool are ready to go back in for the talented striker, having previously seen an £8 million approach rejected by River Plate.

Alario, who has a release clause worth £15.2 million, could be an astute purchase for either club, especially considering the premium at which top-class forwards come from within Europe.

However, the latest report also cites interest from Serie A sides Inter Milan and Torino, and the Reds and Spurs may have to prepare themselves for a lengthy battle if they are serious about pursuing their interest.
