Liverpool plan to hand Ben Woodburn a fresh contract after his stunning rise to prominence while on international duty.
According to a report from the Daily Mirror, Liverpool are set to look to hand Ben Woodburn a fresh contract worth £25,000 a week for when he turns 18 next month.
Woodburn is one of the brightest prospects coming through at Anfield currently, but the 17-year-old really put himself on the map with a stunning international break, as he scored the winner in Wales’ World Cup qualifier against Austria and followed it up with another lively cameo against Moldova.
And the Mirror reports that Liverpool are ready to improve the terms he is on, with his salary set to go from £40,000 a year – which is the highest amount a 17-year-old can earn at Anfield during the first year of their professional deal – to £25,000 a week.
The Mirror also suggests that Jurgen Klopp wants the teenager tied down for the next six years at least, which would undoubtedly be a major boost for the Reds if they could agree such a deal.
It certainly makes a lot of sense for Liverpool to try and tie Woodburn down to as long-term a deal as possible, as while they are clearly fully aware of the talent he possesses, his international duty bow would have surely won him plenty of admirers.
The forward – who is the club’s youngest ever goalscorer after scoring against Leeds in last season’s League Cup – can perhaps feel confident that given Klopp’s track record when it comes to working with youngsters and the length of deal reportedly on the table, putting pen to paper is the best decision for him.
Having that long-term deal will allow the Reds to map out to Woodburn the exact path they plan for him to take to ensure that he realises his potential.
And based on what he has shown already during his brief career, that potential seems almost limitless.
