If any Wolves player was to receive January interest from a Premier League giant, you’d perhaps assume it would be Ruben Neves, the prolific Leo Bonatini or the Atletico Madrid loanee Diogo Jota.

Not so much Romain Saiss. But according to Moroccan publication Liberation, it is the underrated defensive midfielder who is on the radar of none other than Merseyside giants Liverpool.

While Saiss does not get the same credit or attention as his more creative team-mates, the Moroccan intentional has been an integral part of a Wolves side who have risen to the top of the Championship and look favourites for promotion.

Saiss has started 14 of Wolves’ 16 Championship fixtures and is the glue that holds this exciting side together with his ability to win back possession and provide protection to the defence.

The 27-year-old, who joined Wolves from Ligue 1 side Angers in the summer of 2016, is also exactly the kind of midfielder Liverpool seem to be crying out for – even if it’s up for debate whether he is simply good enough to make such a huge step up.

Conceding sloppy goals remains The Reds’ Achilles heel – they have let in 17 so far this season, more than any other side in the Premier League’s top ten apart from Watford.

Jordan Henderson is usually fielded in front of a shaky back four but he is more of a deep lying playmaker and a natural ball-winner. Saiss, then, would provide grit amongst the guile.
