Liverpool have swooped in to beat PSV Eindhoven to Sepp van den Berg.
According to local newspaper De Stentor in the Netherlands, Liverpool are set to secure their first signing of the summer in PEC Zwolle defender Sepp van den Berg.
The Reds were always bound to make signings even after winning the Champions League, and it seems that they’ve got one eye on the future with this move.
It’s believed that Liverpool have swooped in to hijack PSV Eindhoven’s interest in Van den Berg, as whilst PSV spoke to him just last week, Liverpool have now moved to try and finalise a deal.
17-year-old centre back Van den Berg will seemingly make the move to Anfield, with the Reds paying between €1.5million and €2million (£1.34million and £1.8million).
If Liverpool get this deal done, then it’s an absolute bargain. This isn’t the usual 17-year-old centre back being plucked from a European youth team having shown a little promise.
6ft 2in Van den Berg has already racked up 16 first-team appearances for PEC Zwolle, and was developed by Jaap Stam last season as he emerged as a top young talent.
Had Van den Berg been a Championship player, that fee would have exponentially more. Yet Liverpool have managed to land a top teenage defender for what is essentially lose change at Anfield.
He may not be Matthijs de Ligt, the Dutch defender many Liverpool fans want, but Jurgen Klopp will now hope to develop him to a similar level over the coming years – and it would come without even breaking £2million.
