According to SPORT, Liverpool now face competition from Chelsea in the race to sign Barcelona defender Ronald Araujo.

What’s the story?

Well, it was ESPN who revealed that Liverpool are interested in the centre-back, who Barcelona signed for just €1.7m (£1.4m).

Now, Thomas Tuchel and Chelsea are ready to make life difficult for Jürgen Klopp and the Reds, as they prepare to enter this transfer battle.

Araujo has blossomed at the Camp Nou this season, despite the club’s issues under Ronald Koeman, who has since been replaced by Xavi.

The 22-year-old – who earns £35,000-a-week – has become a key player this season, making 14 appearances in all competitions, scoring one goal.

Having only recently replaced Koeman, the last thing Xavi will want is to lose the 5-cap Uruguay international.

By the sounds of it, Liverpool and Chelsea have a good chance of luring the South American away from Catalonia.

SPORT believe Barcelona are keen to renew the defender’s contract, which expires in June 2023.

However, interest from the Premier League has complicated things, and SPORT are claiming that Araujo isn’t ruling out a move to England.

SPORT add that he earns far less than his colleagues, but Barcelona are unable to offer him a significant pay rise due to their financial situation.

On the contrary, Liverpool and Chelsea can offer him eye-watering sums in comparison, which will surely turn his head.

Keep an eye on this saga, as it seems the Premier League duo have a good chance of landing the colossal centre-back.
