According to Sky Sports, Liverpool are keeping an eye on Manchester City and Real Madrid target Enzo Fernandez as Jürgen Klopp eyes midfield reinforcements.

What’s the story?

Well, Melissa Reddy believes the Reds are monitoring the 21-year-old, who is also wanted by Carlo Ancelotti at the Santiago Bernabeu, as well as Pep Guardiola – according to Spanish news outlet AS.

Los Blancos are eyeing the midfielder as an heir to Luka Modric.

The Argentinian moved from River Plate to Benfica in July, where the Portuguese giants included a release clause worth €120m (£103m) into his contract, although players are actually permitted to transfer more than once in one window.

Fernandez has began life at Benfica on fire, scoring three goals in his first seven appearances, including two in four Champions League qualifying matches to help the Portuguese giants into the Group Stage.

AS add that Manchester United are also admirers of the South American.

Sky Sports also claim that there would have been ‘front and centre’ discussions involving Liverpool and Borussia Dortmund if Jude Bellingham was on the market this summer.

Liverpool pay price for not signing Real Madrid & Manchester City target

For most of this summer, Klopp has been insistent that he doesn’t need another midfielder.

That has been quite an empty statement, seeing as there was a real push for Aurelien Tchouameni before he joined Real Madrid back in June – clearly, midfield was identified as an area in need of strengthening.

Now, Liverpool are faced with the monumental task of trying to sign Fernandez despite his £103m release clause and also competition from Real Madrid, Manchester United and Manchester City.

With a bit of foresight, Liverpool could have signed the Argentine before he moved to Benfica, but Klopp’s stubbornness now looks set to bite him on the backside as he has just days to find a midfielder.
