According to The Mirror, Liverpool asked about signing Bayern Munich star Thomas Muller this past summer, with Arsenal and Chelsea also understood to be interested.

Muller, 27, has come up through the ranks with Bayern, and he has not only become one of the Bavarian’s giants’ top players, but also an important figure in the German national team having proven himself as a reliable goalscorer.

Muller has notched 161 goals in 398 games for Bayern, whilst his record of 37 goals in 87 caps for Germany is hugely impressive, having earned a reputation for scoring goals on the big stage.

With just nine goals for Bayern last season, Muller failed to hit double figures for the first time since the 2008-09 season, and he only played five times then, summing up just how disappointing he was under Carlo Ancelotti last term.

The Mirror now report that Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool all made moves to sign Muller this past summer, and whilst Bayern stood firm, the Premier League trio could return with new moves for the German star in January.

Bayern may not be too keen to lose Muller in the middle of the season, whilst Liverpool’s interest could hinge on the future of Brazilian star Philippe Coutinho, amid strong interest from Barcelona.

If Liverpool do relent and sell Coutinho for a huge price in January, then manager Jurgen Klopp will have a considerable transfer kitty to work with, and splashing it on Muller could be ideal.

Hard-working and so dangerous in and around the box, Muller wouldn’t be a direct replacement for Coutinho in terms of being a tricky, skilful playmaker, but he could bring a clinical edge that Roberto Firmino sometimes lacks.

Adding a marquee signing like Muller, who still has plenty to offer at 27, to the likes of Firmino, Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah could be perfect if Coutinho does leave, bringing quality into the side whilst also adding a player who fits Klopp’s ‘gegenpressing’ style – and there may be a growing sense that Bayern could sell as he fights for a role under Ancelotti.
