Liverpool and Everton are battling to sign Preston North End defender Josh Earl during the January transfer window.

The Sun reported back at the start of November that the Toffees were keen on signing the 19-year-old, who has been excellent for the Lilywhites in the Championship this season, and now their Merseyside rivals have joined them in the chase.

Earl has been one of a number of players who have really impressed for Alex Neil’s side in the second tier this term, making 12 league appearances to date, and helping Preston put themselves to within touching distance of the division’s top six going into 2018.

While it is not clear how the youngster would feel about leaving the club that he has spent more than a decade on the books of, he would surely be forgiven for wanting to stay where he is for the time-being even if the Premier League pair come calling.
If he continues to progress at his current rate, the interest will surely still be there in the coming years, and he may be able to move on with a lot more first-team experience under his belt than he may perhaps get in the short-term if he leaves for Anfield or Goodison Park during next month’s window.
